Magnetic Loop Test

 Vor einiger Zeit habe ich eine Magnetic Loop bei AliExpress besorgt. Diese funktioniert überraschend gut. Mein Plan ist die Antenne für SOTA Ausflüge zu benutzen. Vor Wochen hatte ich ein negativ Erlebnis am Mandelstein. Da konnte ich nur eine Station auf 2m erreichen. Meine Hoffnung ist auf Kurzwelle mehr Stationen zu erreichen und so auch SOTA Punkte zu aktivieren die in weniger guten Empfangslagen sind.

Dieser Bericht erzählt teilweise von einer Enttäuschung auch das gehört zu unterem Hobby.

Magnetic Loop Test

 Some weeks ago I acquired a magnetic loop antenna via Ali Express. The antenna works fine, I'm quite surprised about the performance. My plan is to use it on SOTA activities, as I learned that remote locations might not allow to get enough stations on 2m. I hope to get more stations via HF to get my SOTA requirements fulfilled.

This report documents a faulure, this also happens in this hobby.

Am ersten Mai 2021 habe ich einen Probegalopp versucht um etwas Erfahrung mit dem Umgang zu sammeln. Was braucht man tatsächlich an Kabeln, Konverter Steckern. Funktioniert das mit dem Stativ und ähnliches mehr.

In aller Kürze: die Technik selbst funktioniert wie geplant. Meine Abneigung gegenüber Contest Aktivitäten wurde wegen deren rücksichtslosen Verhalten deutlich vertieft.
On 1st of May 2021 I started an outdoor activity to collect some experience with the required gear. What cables are required, connectors and converters. Is my plan on tripods working?

To make a long story short: HW worked as planned. My aversion about contest activities got deepened due to the reckless behavior on the bands.
 
Oberhalb vom Wiener Stadtgebiet befindet sich die Gemeinde Gießhübl. Am Friedhofsparkplatz ist faktisch immer Platz da stört man niemanden. Die Stelle ist mir aus früheren 11m Zeiten bekannt, Standortbezeichnung damals "Monte Skeletto".
Weiter oberhalb der Ortschaft liegt der Parkplatz der Kuhheide. Dort gibt es viele Besucher das ist für Funkaktivitäten weniger geeignet. Man muß dort etwas weiter weg gehen um Ruhe zum Funken zu haben. Also abseits des Autos, daher ist der Friedhofsparkplatz besser geeignet.
Above Vienna there is the village Gießhübl. Nearby the cemetery there is always free space on the car park. I know the space from former 11m times. The location has the name "monte skeletto".
The site is quite silent on HF so ideal to run a radio. There is a better known place more upwards of the village called "Kuhheide". As there are usually many visitors it is hard to operate a radio there. This is away from the car. So the car park at the cemetery makes it much easier to pick up required stuff from the car.

Nach dem mechanischen Setup habe ich die Loop abgestimmt. Man erreicht mit der Antenne sehr gute SWR Werte man sieht aber auch die Antenne ist relativ schmalbandig ist.

Nach dem mechanischen Setup habe ich die Loop abgestimmt. Man erreicht mit der Antenne sehr gute SWR Werte man sieht aber auch die Antenne ist relativ schmalbandig ist.

Ich habe den VNA benutzt um die gewünschte Resonanz zu trimmen. Danach habe ich die Einstellung am IC705 nachkontrolliert. An dem Nachmittag habe ich mehrere verschiedene Frequenzen benutzt, weil am Band leider extrem viel los war.

I used the VNA in the first place to move the resonance to the desired place. After I have finished the tuning, I verified it on the IC705. I have used several different frequencies as I moved around on 40m, there was a lot of QRM.

Das Bild der SWR Messung am IC705 zeigt dieses Setup war nicht optimal abgestimmt. Man sieht hier im gespreizten Messbereich die Schmalbandigkeit der Antenne. Die Fotos sind nicht sehr gut - Licht war schlecht und ich hatte nur das Smartphone dabei.
The picture of the SWR measurement on the IC705 shows that the antenna was not perfectly calibrated. The measurement shows that the bandwidth is quite narrow. Sorry about the picture quality. Light was bad and I had only my smartphine to take the pictures.

Der IC705 ist auf dem kleinen Stativ aufgestellt das mit der MagLoop mitgeliefert worden ist. Die Längenverstellung der Füße erlaubt eine sichere Montage auf unebenem Grund, hier ein großer Stein. Die Antenne selbst habe ich auf einem höheren Stativ montiert. Mit beiden Stativen hat man eine gute Möglichkeit die Antenne zu drehen und damit auszurichten.

Aufgrund des enormen QRM das ein italienischer und russischer Contest an diesem Nachmittag verursachten war kein QSO möglich. Es war sogar im CW Beriech SSB Betrieb zu beobachten. Ich bin wirklich sauer!
The IC705 is mounted the the small tripod which was shipped with the mag loop. It offers a good method to place it on an uneven surface in this setup on a rock besides the car park. The antenna itself was mounted on a bigger tripod. Both tripods allow to spin the antenna to adjust it in the desired direction.

Due to the enormous QRM caused by an Italian and Russian contest running on that weekend I was not able to get a QSO. Quite disappointing, so another try is planned over the next couple days. I monitored even on CW bands SSB activities. I'm really fed up!
