HAM Radio Bands

There are many HAM radio bands for amateurs in the short wave spectrum. Most bands are used world wide but there are some minor differences depending on the region.
Currently there are 9 different bands available after the World Administrative Radio Conference held in 1979 (WARC 79). Out of this some of the newer bands are less often used as old equipment and especially antennas do not support it.

6 Meter 50.000 - 52.000

6 Meters 50.000 - 52.000

The 6 meter band was recently released to HAM amateurs. The characteristic is only good for short distances. At a high of sun activities it allows long distances as well via reflections on E and F propagation.

10 Meter 28.000 - 29.700

10 Meters 28.000 - 29.700

This is a quite big band with lot of bandwith. It offers also various operating modes.
During low sun activities it offers only short coverage of up to 1500km. During high sun activity its also good for long distance contacts. Typicly a daylight band. It offers stations with low power and poor antennas long distance contacts.

12 Meter 24.890 - 24.990

12 Meters 24.890 - 24.990

The 12 meter band has a high dependency on sun activity. During high activity periods it can be used during day time for DX connections. Durigh night the band is closed. It is less frequently used than other HF bands.

15 Meter 21.000 - 21.450

15 Meters 21.000 - 21.450

The conditions in the 15 meter band is more depended on sun activities than in the longer bands. During sun activity peak it is available during day and night.

17 Meter 18.068 - 18.168

17 Meters 18.068 - 18.168

The 17 meter band is quite narrow. It offers good conditions for amateurs with average stations. During high sun activity daylight connections are possible. Noise is rather low in this band.

20 Meter 14.00 - 14.350

20 Meters 14.000 - 14.350

The 20 meter band is the typical DX band. During high sun activity it may be used all day. During minimum it might work during daylight or is totally closed. The band is sometimes very crowded and some stations us extreme high power which makes it more difficult for average stations.

30 Meter 10.100 - 10.150

30 Meters 10.100 - 10.150

The 30 meter band is quite narrow. It should only be used for CW and data. It allows global contacts bit night goes better than day operation.

40 Meter 7.000 - 7.200

40 Meters 7.000 - 7.200

The 40 meter band offers a mixture of long and short distance connections. There are some commercial stations here but HAM works as well. During day only a few 100km are covered during night long distance is possible.

80 Meter 3.500 - 3.800

80 Meters 3.500 - 3.800

The 80 meter band can be quite noisy, as it is shared with other services. Propagation along the grey line can produce exceedingly good results with stations from the other side of the globe being audible at the same strengths as many local stations

160 Meter 1.810 - 1.950

160 Meters 1.810 - 1.950

The 160 meter band is lowest frequency for HAM radio amateurs. After sunset it offers good DX conditions along the F layer.
