Das ist eine weitere Möglichkeit Datenverbindungen über Funkamateur Frequenzen abzuwickeln. Konkret, so die Infrastruktur im Empfangsbereich aufgebaut worden ist, auf dem 70cm oder 2m Band einen Link ins HAM Net aufzubauen. Die sonst üblichen 5GHz Verbindungen brauchen weit bessere Verhältnisse, meist Sichtverbindung. Auf 70cm sind größere Reichweiten möglich, die Bandbreite ist natürlich geringer. Mails und WEB Seiten laden ist da kein Problem selbst Audio sollte bei 200kBaud noch gut gehen.

This is an additional possibility to set up a data connection on HAM radio frequencies. Of course only if the required backend infrastructure has been built up in your region. It works on 2m and 70cm and allows a connection into the HAMnet. Classic HAMnet connections run via 5GHz the NPR offers lower frequencies with reduced bandwidth. For Mails WEB Pages it should not be a big issue. Even audio streams should be fine on 200kBaud

 
Die Elektronik bzw. die Firmware ist noch extrem rudimentär. Doku ist spartanisch und teilweise falsch. Wichtige Details erfährt man nur an der Latrine. Auch die Groups.io Gruppe hilft da nicht wirklich weiter. Gutes Beispiel wie macht man den empfohlenen SW Update? Gibt es da ein spezielles Kommando um das auszulösen?
The electronics or the firmware is currently quite simple. Documentation is also not covering the required info. Important information is not availabe directly, you need to know somebody who can provide the required details. The Groups.io is no help on basic stuff. Best example on that issue is the question how is the recommended update done? Is there a special command to do that?
 
Eine NPR Station braucht im Grunde nur das "Modem" das ist ein keiner 70cm Sender und ein STM Nucleo Board. Ergänzend dazu kann man einen Verstärker anschließen. Mein Verstärker kann bis zu 30, die sind für größere Entfernungen nötig.

Die Bandbreiten der Verbindung kann man einstellen mit dem Parameter modulation. Es sind etwa 200-600kBaud möglich. Ein Maser Modem bestimmt die mögliche Geschwindigkeit für alle Clients die sich anschließen wollen. Ich erwarte daß die Geschwindigkeiten eher nieder eingestellt werden um größere Distanzen abdecken zu können.
A NPR station needs basically only the "modem". It has a small 70cm radio and a STM Nucleo board. It's possible to add an amplifier. My amplifier offers up to 30W absolutely necessary for bigger distances.

The bandwidth for the connection can be configured with the modulation parameter. It is possible to get 200-600Baud speed. It is important to understand, that the master modem defines the speed for all connected stations. I expect that most masters will be configured on medium speed to cover larger distances.
 

Das NPR Modem

 Das NPR Modem ist ein vollständiges 2m oder 70cm Funkgerät. Es stellt am Ausgang eine Ethernet Schnittstelle zur Verfügung.

Der Verstärker

 Der Verstärker ist der VR-P25D. Das "D" am Ende ist besonders wichtig für den Betrieb mit dem Digitalmodem. Damit wird gekennzeichnet daß der Verstärker sehr schnell umschalten kann zwiscehn Rx/Tx.

Normal / Remote Managable

 Das Modem gibt es in zwei Varianten. Man benötigt die normale Version. Falls man die Remote Managable Variante hat, muß am USB Stecker ein PC angesteckt sein. Die Umschaltung erfolgt unten auf dem Nucleo Board. Da gibt es einen 0-Ohm Widerstand der für Normal Einstellung entfernt gehört. Die Nachfolgenden beiden Bilder zeigen das.

Normal / Remote Managable

 The modem is available in two Variants. The normal version is good enough. If you have the remote managable version the USB needs to be conencted to a PC or so. A 0 Ohms resistor on the bottom side of the nucleo board. The next two pictures show the selection. Open means normal version.

VOX Empfindlichkeit

 Einige Verstärker haben Schwierigkeiten die 500mW Ansteuerung aus dem Modem zu erkennen. Dadurch schaltet der Verstärker nie auf Senden ein Connect zum Master ist damit unmöglich.

Durch eine simple kleine Änderung kann man die Empfindlichkeit erhöhen. Der Kondensator zum Auskoppeln des Sendesignals für die VOX Steuerung wird etwas vergrößert damit funktioniert das. Auf den beiden nachfolgenden Bildern sieht man zunächst die Originalsituation. Der Kondensatior ist markert. Auf diesen Kondensator einen weiteren mit 3 - 5pF huckepack auflöten. Der vorhandene Kondensator hat die Bauform 0402. Ich habe bei meinem Gerät einen 2,7pF Kondensator Bauform 0603 benutzt den ich in der Grabbelkiste vorrätig hatte. 5pF wäre nur in 1208 vorrätig gewesen das war mir dann doch deutlich zu klobig.

VOX Sensitivity

 Some amplifiers have a sensitivity problemn on with the 500mW output power from the modem. This hinders the amplifier to switch into transmit mode. So no connection to the master station can be established.

A simple to install add on solves the problem. The capacitor to link the transmit signal to the VOX detector needs to be a bit bigger. The next two pictures show the change. The capacitor is marked on the picture. Just solder another capacitor piggyback on top of the existing one. The add on capacitor should have 3 - 5pF. I used a 2,7pF capacitor as my scrap box had this valie available. The original component has a 0402 size, I mounted a 0603. I had also 5pF but that would be a 1208 this was faar to bulky for me so I went for the smaller type.

SW Update

 Eingangs habe ich mich über mangelde Doku beklagt. Der SW Update geht sehr einfach. Die Binaries sind auf der Projektseite leicht zugänglich. Der Update ist recht simpel. Es gibt keinen Kommandozeilen gefehl dafür. Man steckt das Modem an USB an. Das erzeugt ein Laufwerk am PC. Dann copiert man den Update auf dieses Laufwerk. Das taucht dort kurz auf und verschwindet recht bald. Das war's FERTIG!

SW Update

 On this page entry I complained about poor doku. The SW update is quick and easy, available from the project page. There is no command for updates available. Just connect the modem via USB to a PC. This generates a virtual drive on the PC. Next just copy the binary to that drive. The file is visible on the drive for some seconds, then it disappears. The modem reboots - DONE!
 

Verbindungs Versuche

 Die ersten Versuche habe ich mit einem OM in unmittelbarer nähe gemacht. Da die anfangs Ärger gemacht haben habe ich mit Unterstützung von OE1KBC eine Verbindung zum ersten NPR Modem am Bisamberg gemacht. Damit war geklärt meine HW funktioniert.

Die Verbindung zu meinem OM in 800m Entfernung sind vermutlich wegen einem simplen Kabelproblem gescheitert. Neue Versuche stehen noch aus, man hat leider auch abseits des Hobbies auch noch ander Verpflichtungen.

Local Connection Experiments

 My initial experiments with a local OM did not work at all. With support of OE1KBC I verified my hardware against the NPR station on Bisamberg.

The connection to my OM about 800m away from me did not word as he had a broken cable. More tests will be done but during week days QRL demands too much time resources.
